This site provides some information on the training of the sheepdog to work with sheep. The basic dog training of a sheepdog is described and the basic abilities of a shepherd and sheepdog are explained.

The herding sheepdog’s best feature is its excellent ability to observe and react. The dog reads the behaviour of the sheep, and thus it can predict in which direction the flock of sheep and the situation will turn. The dog simultaneously observes the movements and position of the shepherd relative to the sheep flock. The dog will put his pressure on the sheep, so they’ll move up toward the shepherd. A good sheep dog thinks for itself, and a well trained dog do not need to be corrected with the commands of the shepherd in most situations.
This is the ideal situation, where the dog fully respects the shepherd, as the superior leader. A good leadership is founded on the basis of mutual respect, as a result of a fair distribution of correction and praise from the shepherd's side. Sheep dogs loves to work and will solve any task shepherd assigns it to.
The ability to herd is instinctively in herding breeds, but before the sheepdog becomes a good working dog, it is a requirement that the dog and its shepherd achieve a good working relationship through training. The foundation of an excellent working team is understanding between the sheepdog and shepherd, and respect from the both of the other's qualities and abilities to solve problems.
